Just two hours later, the royal jet carrying Nicholas and Tara landed in Paris, and they were whisked into a limousine which carried them through the busy streets to an office on the West Bank where Nicholas's associate, Dr. Antoine Bordeau, greeted both of them. Tara filled out an extensive questionnaire, then answered even more questions from the kindly but persistent Dr. Bordeau. After a thorough physical examination and lab work, he shook his head and muttered to himself in French.

"Tell me it's nothing serious," Tara said, curious to know if the doctor had learned anything or if the trip had been a wild-goose chase.

Dr. Bordeau smiled and shook his head. " 'Serious' is a relative term. I believe your vertigo may be related to an inner ear problem."

"But don't people with inner ear problems usually get nauseous?"

"Often, but not always. I think you have learned to compensate for this problem over the years. Crystals form, and if they are displaced in the semicircular balance canals, they can stimulate the balance nerve inappropriately. From my examination, I believe it is your right ear. And you said you tend to fall toward your right? Yes?"

"Yes," she murmured, not knowing whether to be relieved or dismayed that there was a physical reason for her lack of coordination.

"This is a very satisfying kind of condition to treat because the treatment is a repositioning procedure and it's ninety-five percent effective."

"You mean I might not be a klutz anymore after today?" she asked, amazed at the prospect.

"Let's see what happens," he said.

Forty-five minutes later, Tara walked out of the doctor's office with follow-up instructions for the next forty-eight hours. "That was too easy," Tara said, almost afraid to hope Dr. Bordeau had been right. "Too easy."

"Just follow Dr. Bordeau's instructions, and you should notice a difference pretty soon," Nicholas said.

"But why didn't my doctor back in the States catch this?" asked Tara, confused and a little angry, as Nicholas escorted her to the limo.

"I think it's like you said. Your doctor was usually focused on trying to repair the damage caused by the vertigo, and you're not much of a complainer."

She shot him a dark look. "Are you saying I should have been more of a whiner?"

Nicholas paused, then nodded. "Yes. If something was bothering you, if you felt dizzy, then you should have told someone."

"My father was already so disappointed in me, I didn't want to emphasize my shortcomings any more by complaining. I know he would have much preferred having a boy instead of a girl, especially after my mother died when I was seven." Tara felt a slice of pain mingled with embarrassment at what she'd revealed. She'd always known she didn't measure up to what her father had expected from her.

Nicholas gently tapped his finger on her nose. "You've gotten awfully quiet. What's the American expression? A penny for your thoughts?"

She gave a sad smile. "I think this is one of those times when I could pay a professional a lot of pennies to talk about my thoughts.
